About The On Being Project

The On Being Project is a nonprofit media and public life enterprise. After close to 20 years of being anchored around weekly production of On Being for public radio and podcast, we are embarking on an ambitious new phase of seasons of podcast production, content and resource innovation, engagement and convenings. We’re starting to understand ourselves as a community for conversation & living: a home ground for people’s searching. People come to us to explore the big questions of meaning at the intersection of spiritual inquiry, science, social healing, and the arts: What does it mean to be human? How do we want to live? Who will we be to each other? Wherever people meet us, we make space for new ways of being. You can find us in the studio producing the award-winning global podcast On Being and the acclaimed podcast Poetry Unbound, incubating tools in the Lab for the Art of Living, and in the world, hosting quiet conversations and not-so-quiet gatherings. Learn about our story and our team at onbeing.org.

The Opportunity

The On Being Project is seeking an extraordinary marketer for the next-stage growth of our work. This is an opportunity to join an eclectic, ambitious, and thoughtful team at the most exciting juncture of the life of On Being. The ideal candidate has deep, demonstrable experience growing a multi-platform brand and engaging audiences across channels and mediums. They’ve also partnered with brand and product leads to create consumer-centric digital tools, apps, and other resources that work back from rich data about how people might bring them into their own lives. Our Project is distinct, and so is our vision for growth. New content and experiences are emerging under three pillars of work, creativity, and impact: On Being Studios (content that nourishes and replenishes), On Being Lab (tools and extensions that help people reshape their presence), and On Being Gatherings (various in-person and digital gatherings in support of remaking life together). Our work is supported by wonderful philanthropic funders, and increasingly, through diverse and emergent revenue streams (membership, sponsorship, tools and experiences). This role will be an opportunity to shape and extend the reach and depth of our outreach and engagement – always through the lens of experience – to the millions globally who are in the adjacent spaces that make up the project’s DNA.

Responsibilities

In the next stage of our adventure, where we are for the first time moving away from On Being being a weekly offering to invest more energy across our ecosystem of accompaniment, you would work closely with our VP, Head of Experience & Strategy, directors of other disciplines and members of your discipline, to:

Build and own the marketing calendar across channels;
Alongside our VP and creative partners, concept and execute campaigns across our ecosystem, with an eye towards creative effectiveness and media efficacy;
Lead initiatives around engagement and retention of current audiences across offerings;
Based on our rich audience research and ongoing learning efforts, find and bring in new audiences through partnerships, press, and new business initiatives;
Help oversee and operationalize our content strategy;
Shape our newsletter offerings (currently: The Pause, and Poetry Unbound) and the role of newsletters as a core touchpoint in our ecosystem;
Help oversee the development of our app alongside our partners and colleagues as we sharpen its value proposition and feature set;
Help manage, alongside our VP and communications partner, the applications of our brand foundations and redesign, and brand re-architecture across every touchpoint where people meet us;
Lead the integration of new extensions to our ecosystem, e.g. On Being publishing, and identify new opportunities organic to our work in the studio and the world;
Bring in partners and vendors to extend our internal capabilities in emergent areas (product, media, etc.);
Manage and build out the discipline of Marketing & Campaign Planning and a growing team of staff and collaborators under your supervision, including the Digital Experience Manager and two new roles in the organization — a Content Strategist and a Marketing Coordinator;
Oversee various project budgets and partner with the VP of Operations & Vitality to ensure work is planned and executed within budget.

Required Experience

7-10 years of experience in planning and executing digital-first brand, creative and performance-driven campaigns, including building and managing a high-performing digital team, and successfully collaborating across internal and external teams and workflows;
4+ years experience managing people, mentoring and getting the best out of teams, collaborating closely across disciplines, and managing external partners and vendors;
Experience with lifecycle marketing categories, campaign development, and data practices;
A portfolio that demonstrates effective and innovative strategies across business development, products and digital platforms, leading to growth in scale and depth of participation;
Experience with a test-and-learn and iterative approach to make the most of our resources and efforts;
An ability to see the possibilities of the digital experience as both a driver of human connection and social change and as a business development opportunity.

Our work is about joining inner life with outer presence in the world. The process that has unfolded is woven through our organizational life in an ongoing way, including training, individual and team coaching, and specific projects that help us make Placemaking a daily, lived practice. Everyone at The On Being Project shares this commitment. It applies not only to how we understand and relate to each other at work, but also how we advance editorial perspectives, voices, and approaches in the content we produce and how we engage with our listeners, community networks, and partners.
