Join Smartpress and AIGA Minnesota on a photographic road trip with Minneapolis designer Caroline Royce as she retraces the course she charted creating Northerly, a self-published quarterly magazine that she describes as her “love letter to the place I’m from.”

Sparked by a chance encounter on Valentine’s Day, the magazine’s breathtaking salute to northern beauty, serenity and life was, according to Caroline, the ideal way to hone old skills, learn new ones and have the satisfaction of seeing a project through from beginning to end.

With yet another issue – her third, scheduled for release this spring and press raves coming from the likes of the Star Tribune who’ve called it “an Instagram feed come to life,” Caroline hopes her original “side hustle” will soon turn into much more – more staff, more issues, more stories and more success. We’d say she’s well on her way.
