#32Under32 Winner: Chris Bordeaux

By rizeabove / / Time for another 32 Under 32 interview. This one features Chris Bordeaux, Director of Creative Services at Navigation North. Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks for more. Congrats on being selected for 32 under 32. The judges have reviewed and scored every entry, looking for professionals who really go above and beyond in their work. How do you think you approach your job differently than other people? Even as a teenager at my first job, I always put the customer first. Reality is, if clients aren’t paying bills, I don’t have a job. I operate as if the client is my boss. In the agency world it’s not uncommon to find “adequate” solutions for clients, or to meet some set of agreed upon minimal outcomes. But I’ve never settled for just a passing grade when it comes to client satisfaction. It’s my goal to always enhance the experience clients receive when working with me. I also love making my co-workers laugh! What kind of accounts/projects do you currently work on? Currently I’m splitting time between marketing initiatives for Navigation North and managing my first key account, the US Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology. I’ve enjoyed partnering with folks from Washington DC! It was a little intimidating to start with, but as it turns out every time, people are just people. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Give someone enough rope and they’ll hang themselves. I know this doesn’t sound very positive, but it’s proven to be valuable to me in the past. I don’t have to control everything, and if others are not meeting expectations, it will eventually be noticed. What gets you excited to come to work everyday? The possibilities of the future. I firmly believe I can achieve anything. I will never stop making the decisions I believe are right and forging my own path. I work in an environment that doesn’t hold me back and allows me the freedom to do what I truly feel is best. I can bring any idea to the table and no one dares to tell me to shut up. I am very lucky. What has been some of your proudest work? The variety of work I produced and managed with America’s Next Top Model All-Star Winner, Lisa D’Amato. While I lived in Los Angeles we completed an array of artistic and creative projects, from iPhone apps and websites to music videos and television pilots. We were forced to think outside-the-box on a daily basis and those experiences have carried into my problem solving skills today. This boy from a small town in the Midwest partied at the Playboy Mansion. And yes, my dad is totally jealous. Who is one person who has helped you get where you are? Or, one person you really look up to? Madonna. As a gay youth riding the bus and walking the hallways at school, I could escape bullying and harassment by listening to her music in my headphones. In a strange way, she has always been an important support of mine. She reminded me I am strong, I can achieve anything, and to not rely on other people for happiness. Also, she’s a mad crazy marketing genius. Madonna has pushed tons of product and is the number one selling female recording artist in history. The irony found in her art is also way misunderstood, which I can identify with. Anything you want to say to the Minnesota advertising, PR, marketing community? Don’t discount all “tech agencies” as just people who can build you a website. The company I work for, Navigation North, offers so many other ways to help organizations. We don’t just build websites. More clients would be well suited if they moved forward considering technology, design and messaging strategy as a cohesive effort rather than separate elements.
