Webby-nominated Boundary Waters Traverse documentary finishes first

The Boundary Waters Traverse is a 12-minute documentary about Alex Falconer, a lifelong trailrunner attempting to protect the wilderness he loves.  Falconer’s efforts have greatly impacted the Boundary Waters community, and his appearance on screen has cast a new light on an age-old cause. Several months after its official release in December 2021, the film is still making waves.

Falconer completed the traverse on May 22, 2021, running over 110 miles, connecting the Border Route and Kekekabic Trail, finishing with a time of 38hrs 15 minutes and 3 seconds.  Current Resident, a production house local to Minneapolis, followed Falconer and his team along their trek, capturing their passion, hard work, and dedication.  By filming his ambitious effort, they sought to enlighten viewers not only regarding Falconer himself, but the entire Save the Boundary Waters campaign.

Run through the Webby’s: As one of only five documentaries chosen from around the world, “The Boundary Waters Traverse” found itself among the twelfth percentile of over 14,000 applicant projects.  The short film took first place in both major categories deemed “Best of the Internet,” bringing home the Webby and Webby People’s Voice Awards.  While The Webby is chosen by Academy judges themselves, The Webby People’s Voice is decided by the public.

To paraphrase Save the Boundary Waters’ own website: Sulfide-ore copper mining this close to ‘The Wilderness’ is inherently dangerous and will cause damage that cannot be prevented or fixed. It can only result in destroying thousands of acres of land, massively disrupting wildlife, increasing traffic, creating water, noise, and air pollution and irreparably damaging the existent sustainable amenity-based economy. Even still, listed prior are only a portion of the dangers presented by this industry.

The final comment was presented by Current Resident: “We seek to raise awareness, help the cause and make a difference. Please like and share the documentary with family, friends, and wilderness defenders alike.”
