Fresh Meat Friday: Cody Petts

For all the glory send the info to: [email protected] Our fresh cut this week comes from an unexpected background, he came from a father that is a welder and a mother that is a potato farmer and worked hard to become a talented artist. Twin Cities meet Cody Petts, a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and a graphic design intern at Make Retail. Cody fell in love with design ever since he first opened Adobe Illustrator CS1 in high school 7 years ago and he told us, “Not coming from a creative background, I felt like I had a chip on my shoulder. I felt like I needed to prove myself, it’s not everyday a farmer becomes an artist after all. So I poured my soul into it. I would stay 3 hours after school dismissed so I could use the computer lab to learn all I could and tinker around with photoshop and illustrator (we didn’t have a computer at home). I would make fun photo manipulations and even read the Adobe Photoshop CS3 Bible when I got stumped on something. Sure it was exhausting at times, but I would do it all again in a heartbeat.” Impressive. The best part it is it seems like all of Cody’s hard work really paid off. A recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a BFA in Multimedia Design, he already has an impressive portfolio under his belt, a Best of Graphic Design Award from the Design Show at UW-Stout, and held an internship at Make Retail in St. Paul. The thing that drew us to Cody’s work is his playful use of structured typography and his innovative way of looking at designing for categories in a very different way. From a movie theater refreshments packaging set that feels quite high end to a lovely one off direct mail piece for Tabasco sauce that is highly conceptual and more, he offers a nice range of design and conceptual thinking. Yet one of the more striking things about Cody is his humble nature when talking about his work along with his evident work ethic. In fact, Cody said, “I learned the value of hard work at an early age, I believe that those values still carry with me to this day. To invest everything you have into a project may be tough, but I would do it over and over again just to feel that sense of accomplishment. To me, there is no better feeling than accomplishing your goals, and that is what drives me.” Check out more of Cody’s work after the jump. Eric Church: Musical Identity “This is a personal project that I created as a tribute for country music star Eric Church. Church is a country music hero in my small town and I really wanted to design some elements that embody his unique style. It started off as just a CD case and it grew to posters and bottle designs to even cigars.” Tabasco (Limited Edition) Packaging “Graphic Design II final project. Take a pre-existing product and redesign the packaging. This is Tabasco Limited Edition Dynamite Sauce. the box is meant to resemble an old style dynamite box.” Palace Theater Identity “This is a rebrand for a small local movie theater in Antigo Wisconsin. The theater is one of the many staples of little antigo and has a rich history. My goal was for the brand to reflect on the historical values of the theater and the town.” Pilgrim Poster: Quote from “Jeremiah Johnson” “This is a screen printed poster representing the style of the mountain men. Jeremiah Johnson was one of these men who lived off the land. The quote is from the movie representation of Jeremiah’s life and adventures.” Pine Typeface “Pine is a finely crafted typeface meant to embody the strength and elegance of nature. Laser cut from wood, each character has rich physicality while maintaining graphic sophistication.”
