MNfashion Feature: Marissa Bridges

By rizeabove / / Our MNfashion blog series is focused on highlighting a few of the local designers that will be showing in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week starting Sep. 23rd. To learn more and get tickets for the events head over to MNfashion’s site. Our fourth MNfashion feature of the week is midwest native, Marissa Bridges. “My grandma is the one who initially got me interested in sewing. When my mom was growing up, my grandma designed and sewed a lot of my mom’s clothes,” states Marissa. Although her drive came from her childhood love of the craft, she got her start studying Apparel Design at University of Wisconsin-Stout and abroad in London. However, she attributes much of learning from the hands on experiences she gained interning at Tata Naka London, Jump n’ Style Skatewear, and Target. One of the things that we love about Marissa’s work and her approach is her steadfast focus on designing for “real” women of all sizes. Along with her unique dyeing techniques, great fits, and interesting use of print/pattern. Her long term goals are not only to continue to grow her line; but, also to find ways to help educate women on how they can dress for their body type. Marissa’s collecting for MNfashion week is focused on the idea of metamorphosis. “I was inspired by the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly,” said Marissa. She continued, “The collection consists of 15 pieces and is broken into 3 smaller collections. The first mini collection is based on the caterpillar, with slimming hour glass silhouettes, mixing of black and white stripes and pops of color on the hem. The second collection is based on the cocoon with more shape to the silhouettes, mixing of textures, and solid color. The last part of the collection showcases the butterfly. This collection is all about the beauty of color.” Marissa Bridges will be a part of the second runway show of MNfashion Week on Wednesday, September 26 along with designers MAI and Adrienne Yancy.
