Our fresh cut this week is a graphic designer and one hell of an illustrator. Twin Cities meet Jacob Boie, a designer at WestmorelandFlint in Duluth, MN. Jacob got his start in the design world through earning his BFA in Graphic Design at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He then first cut his teeth working as a design intern at Cirrus Aircraft followed by his current post as a designer at WestmorelandFlint. Jacob was driven into this career field through his love of the craft. He told us, " I really appreciate that becoming good at a craft takes a long time and you have to spend years struggling with it to get to where you want to be. Remembering that keeps me motivated and excited for the next project. I like the idea that I could be still making things in my sixties, trying to improve and do something new, that inspires me."
We were drawn to Jacob's work not only because he has a great eye for flat illustrations and took home five Addy awards last year alone; but, also for his very experimental nature as seen in his choice and use of typography. We also love the humble nature of his personality that came out through our interview. When asked about his future goals Jacob told us, "I lot of things happening in my life now I wouldn't have predicted 5 years ago, I love that. I can say that I really want to continue to explore illustration and learn more about animation, those 2 things are the most enjoyable for me. I want to be doing the kind of work that makes it hard to believe people are paying me, I just want it to be fun. The best results come that way."
Check out more of Jacob's work after the jump. Also check out our last two features: Kyle Wyatt, a freelance designer and Cory Loven, a freelance illustrator and designer.
